Data

The data exposed by this service is from the International Plant Names Index (IPNI - available online at http://www.ipni.org). IPNI is a database of the names and associated basic bibliographical details of seed plants, ferns and lycophytes. Its goal is to eliminate the need for repeated reference to primary sources for basic bibliographic information about plant names.

The data are freely available and are gradually being standardized and checked, with about 8000 new records added per year and hundreds of thousands of records updated per year. IPNI is a dynamic resource, depending on direct contributions by all members of the botanical community.

IPNI is the product of a collaboration between the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the Harvard University Herbaria, and the Australian National Herbarium.

Service

This service implements the OpenRefine Reconciliation API for entity reconciliation. It consumes a name (family rank or lower), and returns possible matched names’ IPNI identifier.

There is also an alternative basic, custom JSON API — see the service website.

Associated services

Once you have reconciled your data-set of plant names and labelled them with IPNI identifiers, these can be resolved to an XML serialization of TCS-RDF to access structured data about the name, including its nomenclatural status, authorship, bibliographic micro-citation, type details and linked records (e.g. basionym).

Example HTTP URI to access TCS-RDF format version of the IPNI name ID 77147868-1: http://www.ipni.org/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77147868-1
